| AMHSA recognizes that a number of municipal employees have extensive training in the field of health and safety and deserve recognition. We also know that employees and municipalities need guidance in selecting the appropriate training for staff depending on their role within the municipal health and safety program. To address these issues, AMHSA is pleased to offer the following designations:
Each of these designations is described below, including the courses required to achieve the designation. Please note that training must be completed within three years to achieve these certificates - if you are having difficulty finding the courses you require in your area, contact our Training Coordinator, Susanne L'Heureux.

Recognized Municipal Health and Safety Advisor
This certification is intended for municipal employees who take a lead role in coordinating the development / implementation / review of the health and safety management system. This could include the municipality's certified peer auditors, among others. To achieve this designation, participants must take 10 compulsory courses and 2 electives:
Compulsory Courses:
- Health and Safety Management Systems
- WCB's Return to Work Seminar (formerly Disability Management)
- Prime Contractor
- Confined Space Entry
- Ground Disturbance, Trenching and Excavation Safety
- Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program (either Physically Demanding or Office Environment module)
- Health and Safety Management Systems - Audit
- WHMIS: Train-the-Trainer
- Orientation: Train-the-Trainer
- Leadership for Safety Excellence *
* Leadership for Safety Excellence consists of 4 modules: Supervisor's Role; Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control; Formal Inspections; and Incident Investigation. Each module is a half-day course.

Municipal Supervisor in Health and Safety
This certification indicates that the participant has a basic understanding of the supervisor's responsibilities for health & safety.

- Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control
- Formal Workplace Inspections
- Incident Investigation
- Supervisor's Role
- Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program (either Physically Demanding or Office Environment module)
Municipal Joint Health and Safety Committee Representative
Joint Health and Safety Committee members are often expected to assist in the development and implementation of the municipality's health and safety program. Specific activities that they participate in include performing formal inspections and investigating incidents (or reviewing incident reports). Many members feel that they need more training in these areas.
To receive certification as a JHSC representative, participants must take the following courses:
- Joint Health and Safety Committees
- Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control
- Formal Workplace Inspections
- Incident Investigations
